Should You Buy Pre-fabricated Cabinets or Hire A Cabinet Maker?
When deciding between a cabinet dealer for manufactured cabinet products and a local cabinetmaker, first consider the quality difference. Manufactured cabinets are machine measured and quality inspected so the quality is identical from cabinet to cabinet. A cabinetmaker who constructs cabinets on site sometimes uses materials left over from a previous job and in the best circumstances, they cannot guarantee likeness from cabinet to cabinet.
Due to California air quality regulations, local cabinetmakers are not able to duplicate the quality of a nationally manufactured cabinet. The larger manufacturers’ cabinet finish is a baked on, catalyzed, 2 part varnish—not a sprayed or painted on lacquer. Therefore, a manufactured cabinet finish is much more durable and consistent. It also means lower maintenance to the homeowner, who would find themselves having to refinish their cabinets a lot sooner without a catalyzed varnish.
Finally, consider that a cabinet manufacturer’s warranty is 5-10 years, and hardware is covered for the lifetime of the cabinet. The local cabinet maker may not have even been in business for 5-10 years.
The Kitchen Warehouse carries many cabinet manufacturers’ lines with hundreds of door styles and stains to choose from.
